"Despite the shabbiness, it’s proof that humans still exist, proof that, no matter the trial, you’ll continue to live so long as there’s hope, determination and, if you’re being honest, spite."

City of Immortals is a work in progress that follows a pair of siblings after the downfall of the last city in an isolated desert somewhere no one can name. Believing the other to be dead, the two must now struggle their way through their respective situations and hope, somehow, they'll survive.

So what is City of Immortals?

Essentially it's a science-fiction interactive book masquerading as a western. It takes place in two very different locations in this strange world, following two similar characters who think everything and everyone they once lived for is gone. Gradually, the two worlds will collide and the two main characters will finally reunite, but at what cost?

Why should I care?

Why? Well, other than getting this for no cost--albeit currently unfinished--there are a number of current and future features to the game.

  • Completely customizable main characters: You can choose their names, skills, personalities, genders, sexuality and, later, their appearances.
  • Not everyone is completely human, not even you.
  • Two separate stories in two separate locations across the mysterious world the characters inhabit. One is a desert wasteland, abandoned by time and whatever Gods may exist, the other is a sprawling underground city inhabited by, you guessed it, immortals.
  • Where one sibling sets out to solve a mystery of mass-disappearances, another joins a revolt against the decadent ruling class who have spent centuries experimenting on those weaker and less well-off.
  • 13 diverse love interests. There are a collection of male, female, and non-binary characters for each mc, and some who will change depending on your choice. There is also a poly option! Be warned though, not all love interests are equally attracted to every mc!

So what exactly do you have right now?

Right now I have up to chapter two, which should give you an idea of what our two main character's are like. There is also a full save and load system, an autosave system,  and a now working settings screen!

If I want to give feedback, where can I contact you?

Good question! First and foremost you have the comments on this particular post so that's somewhere to start, but if you really want me to see it you're much more likely to find me on my blog. Here, there is also additional content and another game that I'm currently converting to twine like this game is.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read through all this, and I hope you enjoy the game!

Known Issues

If you're using Firefox you may come across a problem with saves.  I don't know what's causing this or if it affects anyone but me but to get around it either play on another browser or directly save your file to your computer, which can be done through the save button.

Just a couple of bugs I found on my playthrough

(2 edits)

Problem I'm seeing is that the presumably gender selectable characters have "hers" where "her" should be. Probably need another pronoun variable for "hers" and make most of whichever one that's currently used there "her"? Pronouns are annoying.

Still really enjoying it years later, though :)

Loved the update!  So excited for more!

I looooooovvvveeee this!!! So glad it's back! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Tho seriously Raven has one more time to be rude and my ass is walking out the door. 😒

Like i have my own shit going on dude! Perci or not. My MC has enough to deal with. 😑

(-1)

Can someone tell me which mc is the older sibling? I forgot. Last time I played it it messed up my entire playthrough because I assumed the older mc was younger (or the opposite?) and built my character that way.

(1 edit)

Hello, currently your first main character (the one in the desert) is the youngest, and the one in the city is the eldest. Hope this helps :)

I think later in chapter two it does specify this, however, I can add another mention in chapter one at some point as well if that would clarify things.

Thanks! Yeah, it mentions it later in the story iirc so it helps for me to know in the beginning to build my character :)

This was fun! But I have one question, how do the meters work? Do they grow from the opposite side or something? Some of the choices I made seemed to have the opposite effect from what I expected

(1 edit)

Hello, at the moment they need some tweaking to get the proper and desired effect and they aren't exactly clear so for that I do apologise. I'll be working on it in the next little bit while I iron out other aspects of the UI

Currently they start in the middle at exactly 50%, signifying that your character is neither one nor the other. For the sake of the variables, technically you are raising or lowering a singular personality trait, but you can read it as the emotion that the meter is tipped towards being the one your character most exhibits. For example naive/worldly: if you're under 50% you will be considered more naive, however, if you're over 50% you will be considered worldly. There aren't currently any scenes for exactly 50% so either way the game will read one way or another depending on the scene--though this is subject to change once more pressing matters are tended to.

I hope this makes sense -- if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask :)

this is incredible with an excellent and unique story idea. i hope it gets updates soon

(+1)

Hi there, hoping to get started on more updates soon. I've had a bit of a hiatus up until this point but I just updated my first game yesterday and I'm hoping to continue this at some point too. Glad you're enjoying it so far :)

(+1)

Ah, excellent! i look forward to it!

(+1)

me too,  I look forward for the new update :)

(1 edit) (+1)

This is new. An IF with 2 MC that you can choose their adventure at the same time? Damn. Is there any update tho?

(+1)

oohhh this is very nice and interesting!! i cant wait for the next chapter

(+1)

I can't wait for more... this is interesting....

(+1)

I can't wait for the next chapter, it's my favourite interactive novel so far! :)

I love your take on werewolves! It being like a separate entity within you, kinda acting separately with its own thoughts, like with it "communicating" through the audible (to you) growls and stuff. It's really neat :D

(+3)

Nice work, I love it! I wanted to let you know that we've mentioned it in our list of recommended Twine stories. But if that's not okay just let me know. You can view it here, let us know if there are any other details we should add for your title --> https://itch.io/t/1763600/twine-games-with-character-customization-part-1

Hey! Enjoying the game, but I just wanted to report something - I chose brother instead of sister, and also chose the "oh, girl," option in the beginning, but Carol referred to my character as a man and the personal info states that I had a sister instead of a brother?

(+1)

Hi! That is correct. The first character in the prologue is not the same character as you play in chapter 1. That character is the brother you chose, whereas in chapter 2  you will start playing as the sister. Each chapter will switch between each character.

Hope this helps. :)

totally missed that, thank you!

As much as I like the premise and everything, the white on black is really hard on my eyes. Would you consider a lighter and more forgiving color scheme?

(1 edit) (+2)

Absolutely no problem there. As it is a newer game I haven't yet gone through and edited much, if any, UI so at the moment it's all mostly at the default settings. I'll try and get that changed to something a bit easier on the eyes before or by the next story update. Thanks for letting me know. :)

This game is great so far! Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

I really like it but it sometimes says "Error: <<set>>: bad evaluation: Unexpected token ',' on some choices.

I don't know if the dev has abandonned this game but it's really good for a demo. Keep it up!!!

(+1)

Hi there! This game is definitely not abandoned, there's an update incoming that may or may not fix the issues, however, if you can could you tell me where these errors pop up so I can help fix them for the next update?

(1 edit)

When you chose ''You barely pay me at all, Carol.'' or ''You barely pay me at all, Caroline.'' it says that but it still takes the answer so it's not really a bad thing.

Ah, okay thank you. That issue has been fixed in the upcoming version so once I update that shouldn't be an issue even if you can get past it. Thanks for letting me know.

(+1)

I absolutely love what you have so far, I'm dying to see what happens next- the characters have drawn me in already

(+1)

I just want to say, I'm super excited to see what this turns into! I just finished playing the demo, and I absolutely loved what's here so far.
