Regrets of the Traitor: Book One
Xactha is in famine, The Waylands may as well be under the iron fist of bandits, and you killed the Queens of Hadaria, exiled their son, and took their place on the throne. You were going to be a hero, now you're little more than a villain who betrayed the people they trusted. All under the guidance of a strange being in your dreams who says there's yet more to come.
Regrets of the Traitor, or RotT, is a high fantasy interactive fiction project where you were the villain all along. Now with a kingdom to run five years later and zero experience, can you weather the storm of a destiny you never knew was written into your blood long ago, or will you perish with the dying world around you?
RotT, is a series of four planned books set in a world of my own creation. While previously written in choicescript, I'm now planning to rewrite and move what I have to twine and basically rework it from the ground up. Currently, I've finished the first chapter, that you can play right here, with more content on the way.
Current Features
- Play through the full first three chapters of book one (chapters 1 through 4 of the original version of the game)
- Customise your character's gender (with trans options), appearance, race (out of a possible nine), and preferred type of weapon.
- Meet nine of the possible love interests
- Dream of strange messengers
- Nameable save slots
- Two stats screens to help track your relationships, skills, and traits.
- A pop-up glossary that will help you with all you need to know about the world of Aebrex
Future Features
- Approximately eleven chapters plus an epilogue, released chapter-by-chapter
- Choose to pursue relationships with sixteen separate love interests all with their own lives, preferences, and allegiances, or don't romance anyone at all. Two possible polyamorous routes included.
- Know your destiny
- Determine what happened five years ago, when you betrayed those that trusted you.
- Join one of three factions to aid you through your journey
- Collect strange artifacts for nebulous reasons.

omg i love it. I hate that i love these authors that want me to cry during updates for my poor MC but I do. 💜
So i got to chapter 4 title screen ok, click continue and it's just blank with nothing to click or continue with..
Okay so! What you've just seen is a mistake on my part but you should still have access to the full content on itch.io.
The newest content is the chapter you would have read to get to that point. Currently it is labelled Chapter Three but it essentially comprises what was originally written in the choicescript version of the game (chapters 1 through 4) hence the confusion regarding chapter titles.
(That, and in my files it is straight up labelled chapter four so rip)
Unless I've completely gone and fudged it, you should still have access to the new content plus a page I used to list out characters that I forgot to delete afterwards.

some bug report: 1) when talking to advisers in the first chapter, there are several choices "why?", "Must I?", etc. If I choose the first one, it sends me on a loop, the second choice moves the story forward. 2)Arke appears twice in the 2 chapter in the town watch scene, when it should be just once. At first, you see him behind some trees and you get a choice about how angry you're towards him. On the next page, you're left alone and Arke suddenly appears.

1) Was as intended, however, I've made the passage more clear and rather than looped it back to the original passage just added the choices so it doesn't repeat content.
2) I... actually cannot replicate this bug. Would you be able to tell me anything about the scene you were in so I can try to pin it down?

Love the update but got to this point and cannot get further even though I am sure there is more. No choice "turns the page" so to speak. I am on mobile but not sure if that makes a difference,
Ah, this is one of the bugs that I specifically couldn't replicate for some reason. If you can recall, what choice had you chosen prior to this screen and was this taking place in or outside the city?

I actually had another look and found a syntax error in the code of this particular page. This should now be fixed and updated though you may need to either save and reload or reload an earlier save after refreshing the itch.io page.

I'm glad to find this again. I really loved it on dashingdon, so I'm hoping to see more. Stupid Arke not realizing my MC's feelings...
i hate this... it makes my heart ache... and i have scoured the LIs... sad to say that a certain someone would never have an interest to my queenslayer, my character would forever wallow in unrequited love for the rest of their life...

hmm it's been some time but from memory alone I don't think we can kiss Arke (yet hopefully) Emeric just said that to get a rise out of Mc and Arke, thing is that Mc says the same thing 2 times mc denies kissing Arke once and Emeri doesn't react and again afterwards leading to the next set of choices
(It seems not to be the case anymore. From a quick check up to the end of the demo the error isn't there anymore)

Im kinda confuse with the deamenor, the thing with purple and blue. example with intimidating/ charming, i choose dont worry about it kid then it have more purple, does it mean im intimidating? or maybe charming (which i wanna be)

On another note, I really like this story! I've played the demo on dashingdon before but having re-read it here, I can see there's been a lot of changes. I'm excited to see what else is different from the previous demo and to play anything new.
I also appreciate the way you've given us freedom to shape the personality of the MC. They're allowed to be strong yet emotional, or cruel but still caring. It's a nice change
Just a slight typo that I saw when you choose to put off the visit to Herron. Second sentence. "Di" instead of Do.

So i liked that different dream entities are actually different, in their personalities. I havnt picked a favorite yet, because Im not sure who / what they really are. Are they someone we want to work with, or really something that has possesed and ruined our lives (not actually asking, look forward to finding out, just expressing my delima reason I cant choose lol)
I liked the plot so far, though honestly it does seem to leave the MC adrift, whether he signs up all the way and considers things his duty, or whether he would rather just ignore it all and let someone else handle it, you are definitely left with the impression that they are not enjoying their position.
But my only serious complaint would be with the captain / commander character. They are seriously disrespectful, and honestly I'd either dismiss them on the spot, or on a bad day, just toss some purple lightening at their chest too and be rid of them. Im nearly certain that is not going to be an option though, But will there be any option to move through the rest of the story without them constantly commenting on how your not good enough / not doing it right / lazy for letting others do things etc. I hate back seat drivers =(

This is a really cool game, with a very interesting story and complex relationships. Congratulations! You do have a few typos and awkward sentences though, but nothing too distracting. Thank you again for this amazing piece of art!

Hi there, I'm glad you like it so far!
If you're working off Firefox unfortunately something about the program at the moment doesn't seem to gel well with the saves. What usually works is saving your game manually which is done by clicking "save" -> "Save to disk" -> the file will usually go into your downloads folder but feel free to move it into its own folder -> then clicking "load from disk" and selecting it in your files to load the game back in. I'm trying to get everything working again but so far this is the only method that seems to work for firefox right now.
If this doesn't work for you, or you're using another browser please tell me so I can look into trying to get that fixed too.

Hi there! Yes all updates will be on itch and my blog now because I'm no longer making the game with choice script. For various reasons I've elected to continue and rewrite it in twine. I'm glad you've found it again.

Yes I definitely do! Because I'm working on two games I'm switching between which ones I'm working on chapter by chapter. I'm currently working on a quick update for this one for the first chapter before I go into the second but the first update should be out soon! I'm glad you enjoy it!
